Understanding the Icicle

A physicist from the University of Toronto has been studying one of the great unsolved mysteries of physics; the icicle. The Washington Post says scientists are trying to figure out why no matter how big the icicle, the space between the ripples is always the same, about a centimeter. A key factor is salt. Icicles made without any salt in the water had no ripples.
