Fight Over Luxury Showerheads

It’s an open secret that the flow restrictor in most showerheads is designed to be easily removed before installation. It’s usually just a little piece of plastic in the pipe that connects the showerhead to the wall. The Wall Street Journal has an excellent article on the government’s recent war on water-hogging multi-head showerheads, which openly skirt the federal 2.5 GPM law. Basically, a new interpretation of the law means that the total amount of water that comes out of the showerhead must be less that 2.5 gallons per minute. Before, the rule was interpreted by some manufacturers to mean each head on a multi-head unit could produce 2.5 gallons a minute.
