Woman Stung 500 Times By Wasps

Written by Pat's Papers | Wednesday, 8 September 2010 10:26 AM

Summer’s winding down but wasp season is in full swing. The Boston Globe says a woman was stung more than 500 times yesterday after inadvertently stepping on a yellow jacket hive. Firefighters had to use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to disperse the mob, which stung a few of them in the process. The woman was discovered unconscious outside her home. Experts say this is prime season for stinging insects as they are in a flurry to collect enough food for their queens before winter sets in. Also, the tradition prey for wasps—small bugs like spiders and flies—are dying off right now, which makes humans and their food more appetizing.

If you do encounter a nest, experts say to run as fast and as far as you can—if possible, towards an enclosed space.
