US Fails to Warn About Foreign Airline Safety

Why doesn’t the US do what Europe does and maintain a list of foreign airlines that suck? That’s the question in this morning’s USA Today. The European Union has a list of 270 airlines from 20 countries that it has banned from flying into the continent’s airports because of safety concerns. The FAA publishes no equivalent, though it rates and evaluates foreign airlines regularly. And, according to the paper, more than 20 percent of the foreign airlines evaluated by the FAA don’t meet basic safety requirements. The agency maintains that it can do more to influence changes in safety standards by working with foreign governments rather than simply naming individual airlines.
