Tunisia a Good Neighbor to Libyan Refugees

Talk about being a good neighbor. The New York Times says there’s no sprawling refugee camp in the Tunisian town where Libyans have fled to escape Ghadafi’s forces—just “two modest clusters of tents housing around 2,500 people. ” That’s because most of the refugees have been welcomed into the homes of their Tunisian neighbors. Says a UN spokesman for the High Commission on Refugees: “It’s the first time I’ve seen such an impressive response.” The Tunisian government has also been praised for their generosity, keeping their borders open for the 276,000 people who have fled Libya so far. When asked what motivates them, the Tunisian hosts recite a local proverb: “Travelers cry upon arriving in this desolate place, but leave with tears in their eyes.”
