Summer Weather Perfect for Fireflies

Think you’ve seen more fireflies than normal this year? You’re right. “It’s like Friday night at the singles bar out there,” says an entomologist interviewed by USA Today. Apparently, it’s something about the combination of warm and wet weather that tends to bring out the fireflies. If you were under the impression that the light show you’ve been enjoying since childhood is a PG-affair, think again. In a word, it’s all about mating. The fireflies lighting up your lawn are probably males trying to attract a willing female, who will only flash back when she sees a “male they find particularly attractive.”
