Singles Tarnish the Power of Platinum

A story in today’s New York Times notes the added importance of a hit single in the iTunes era. The paper uses British hip hop artist Taio Cruz as an example of the tarnished importance of going platinum in the music industry. Cruz has only sold 93,000 copies of his latest album. But he’s sold almost five million copies of the singles “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite.” And videos for the two singles have been viewed almost 50 million times on online. The Times says it’s not uncommon for artists to get more than half of their revenue from sources other than album sales.
