Eight badminton players from China, South Korea and Indonesia have been booted from the Olympic for trying to lose, which would guarantee them a good position in the next round. San Jose Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy says he doesn’t blame the players for tanking, instead he blames the sport’s format. Pointing out that all of the expelled teams had clinched spots in the bracket, he writes: “They were trying to get an edge. Isn’t that what athletes do?”
