Push For Higher Cigarette Taxes a “Gold Rush”

USA Today calls the recent spate of cigarette tax increases around the country a “gold rush.” Fourteen states plus Washington DC raised their cigarette taxes last year. According to the paper, “this only the 10th time since 1950 that so many states have raised cigarette taxes at once.” Even tobacco-producing states are floating increases. The reason behind the push? A desperate need for extra revenue.
