Post Office Uses Wrong Lady Liberty on Stamp
Written by Pat's Papers | Friday, 15 April 2011 7:15 AM

The US Post Office has issued a new stamp featuring the Statue of Liberty. One problem. Instead of picturing the actual statue, someone made a mistake and used a photo of the replica from New York-New York casino in Las Vegas. The New York Times says it was a Lady Liberty “superfan” that spotted the error. Apparently, the Post Office found the image using a photo service and included information of the real Statue of Liberty with its release in December.
The trade publication, Linn’s Stamp News broke the story on the cover of its latest edition. According to their account, the erroneous photo is from Getty Images and was labeled “Replica Statue Of Liberty – Las Vegas.” Whoops.
Beside being half the size of the original and only 14 years old, there are some obvious differences between the two statues: The LV replica has different hair, eyes that are more sharply defined and a patch embedded into her crown. Not one to be fazed the Post Office is rolling with their mistake and Sin City officials couldn’t be happier. Listen to this spin: “Everyone thought the post office was honoring just one great American institution when in reality they were honoring two — the Statue of Liberty and Las Vegas.”
