Phil Isn’t the Only Groundhog

Written by Pats Papers | Tuesday, 2 February 2010 5:14 AM

This just in: Punxsatawney Phil has seen his shadow. That mean we’re in for six more weeks of winter. When I was growing up in Alberta our local groundhog was Balzac Billy. He was forever competing for attention with Canada’s favorite groundhog Wiarton Willie. Which leads to my interest in a front-page story in today’s Wall Street Journal. It’s about rivals to US groundhog-in-chief Punxsatawney Phil.

There are several notable competitors, including some in other Pennsylvania towns. And apparently the field of questionable weather predicting doesn’t belong exclusively to groundhogs. The Journal also finds a forecast from a llama.

PREDICTION UPDATES:
Punxsatawney Phil - 6 more weeks of winter
Staten Island Chuck - early spring
Wiarton Willie - 6 more weeks of winter
Octorara Orphie - early spring
Balzac Billy - early spring
