Obama’s Support of Israel a “Gamble”

In an opinion piece for the LA Times, Doyle McManus says President Obama has made a “strategic gamble” with his decision to cast the US as “Israel’s only friend” after its army attacked an aid flotilla earlier this week. The paper says the president is hoping that backing Israel’s Netanyahu while he’s in the world’s crosshairs will allow the administration to negotiate a more relaxed blockade for Gaza. In addition, Obama hopes that his support now will encourage the Israeli prime minister to be more “forthcoming in peace talks with the Palestinians.”
