According to the Wall Street Journal, “the microwave wants some respect.” After decades without any serious innovation, manufacturers are aiming to heat up the profile of microwave ovens with a slew of new features. The addition of water reservoirs and humidity gauges have led many companies to tout steam microwaves as a cheap alternative to steam ovens.
Historically, another problem is that not that many people are proficient in microwave cooking. Manufacturers are trying to counter that problem with a code system that allows customers to punch in a code found on certain food packages and let the microwave figure out the optimal cooking time.
