Networks Make Emmy Comeback

It was family night at the Emmy’s yesterday—“Modern Family” that is. The ABC comedy swept the awards show with six wins, including one for Best Comedy. The LA Times says in general, it was a great night for network TV, with big wins for Jane Lynch of Fox’s “Glee” and Archie Panjabi of CBS’ “The Good Wife.” The cast of “Mad Men” made it a trifecta, picking up their third Emmy for Best Drama. Edie Falco won for her role on Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” making her the first actress to win Best Actress awards for a comedy and a drama—she won three times for her role in the “Sopranos.”

USA Today critic Robert Bianco says despite a good year and a promising list of nominees, the awards show itself felt like “an illustration of small-screen insecurity.” Working to hard to keep the attention of viewers, Bianco was unimpressed with the NBC broadcast, writing that host Jimmy Falon’s dependence on his guitar was as distracting and the constant reminders of George Clooney’s appearance.

One of the night’s most stunning upsets was Conan O’Brien’s loss to “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” The Times says there had been much speculation on whether voters would stick it to NBC by giving Conan a statue.
