More Women Get PhDs Than Men

For the first time in this country, more women received PhDs than men reports the Washington Post this morning. It’s a change that’s been culminating for years, with women outpacing men, 3 to 2, in all areas of higher education. Experts say doctoral degrees are usually the last to “show the impact of long-term changes,” in terms of social change. Becoming a college professor, the traditional job track for PhD candidates, “often collides with the biological clock,” says the Post, making it a less desirable career for women.

USA Today has a related article, noting to pay gap between men and women is now the smallest on record. Because the recession has disproportionately hit male-dominated industries, there are more men in the unemployment line. At the same time, health care and government—two sectors that employ more women—have weathered less of a hit.
