Meet the BP “Spillionaires”

Written by Pat's Papers | Thursday, 14 April 2011 6:29 AM

Call them “spillionaires.” The Washington Post says after the Gulf oil spill, BP spent so much in the region—$16 billion so far—that it created a “gusher of money” that was disproportionately distributed and “created new divisions and even new wrongs.” Like, for example, the guy who rented BP a generator for $15,400 a month, one that usually cost $1500. Or the company that charged BP $1 million to rent land that had previously been going for $1,700 a month.

ProPublica provided the analysis for the Post article, looking over the records of one coastal town in Louisiana to see illustrate how “companies with ties to parish insiders got lucrative contracts and then charged BP for every possible expense.” Said one local leader: “This parish raped BP.”
