McDonalds to Slow Down Fast Food

McDonalds wants to slow down fast food. The Chicago Tribune got its hands on an internal memo that says the company is trying to emulate Starbucks’ successful cafe model. The idea is to make McDonalds that are more hang out-friendly. Franchises owners willing to remodel their stores to “feature plasma-screen televisions, lounge chairs and electric fireplaces” will get cash incentives from McDonalds to do so. Also, the chain is one-upping Starbucks by adding free Wi-Fi in most of its restaurants.

This picture isn’t great, but in February I was in a remodeled McDonald’s in Vancouver that had implemented some of the hang-out features:
