Louboutin Lawsuit a “Classic French Farce”

Written by Pat's Papers | Friday, 15 April 2011 8:02 AM

Should fashion designers be able to trademark a color? That’s the question at the heart of a lawsuit that reads like a “classic French farce” says the Washington Post this morning. Christian Louboutin is suing Yves Saint Laurent for using red soles on several pairs of its shoes. Louboutin, whose shoes always feature a red sole, had the design idiosyncrasy trademarked in 2008. Apparently the official complaint includes “lyrics by Jennifer Lopez and photos of Sarah Jessica Parker in a dress made of newspaper clippings.”

Oddly, the Washington Post chose not to print accompanying photo in color. The New York Times did a similar thing months ago, in a story about red honey.
