London Proposes ‘Shopper Lane’ for Slow Walkers

Remember the pranksters who painted a line down a sidewalk in Manhattan? It had a slow lane (marked tourists) and a fast one (New Yorkers). Well, the Wall Street Journal says a group of Londoners has taken to the idea. A group of business owners in the Oxford Street district has banded together to come with something called a “shopper lane,” which will run on the inside of the sidewalk. That’s a polite way of saying, “slow walkers, stay to the right.”

Officials say the demarcation will be hard to enforce—and they don’t foresee giving out any tickets for those who dilly-dally in the fast lane. But tourist maps and hotels will inform visitors about the walking etiquette. The Journal says if the plan goes into effect, it will be the first effort to sort pedestrians by speed.
