L.A.‘s Hottest Day Ever

It was hot in Los Angeles yesterday, really hot. The LA Times says the temperature soared to 113 degrees—an all-time high for the state—before the main National Weather Service thermometer downtown stopped working. A repairman was rushed in to reconnect a “highly sensitive wire” but meteorologists say they may never know how hot it actually got.

Lots of California cities set their own record temperatures yesterday, though none surpassed Los Angeles. No one is quite sure what brought on the extreme heat wave. Said a NASA climatologist: “Five days ago, we saw some of the lowest daytime temperatures we’ve seen in 50 years. And today was a once-in-a-century day.”
