Iowa Lake Dries Up Virtually Over Night

Imagine living on a lake and then waking up one day to find it’s disappeared. About 900 homes ring Lake Delhi and until yesterday, they all shared spectacular views of the 450-acre lake in Eastern Iowa. Over the weekend a dam broke, sending water levels plummeting. At one point, the water in the nine-mile lake dropped about a foot in less than four hours. The New York Times says only two days later, all that’s left is a huge track of mud. The town, which relies on lake-based tourism and draws in about 3000 on summer weekends, is reeling from the loss.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette says it will take at least two years to rebuild the road above the dam. It’s still unclear whether the lake will be rebuilt. The Gazette also has a series of great photos documenting the dam collapse.
