Idol’s New Mentor Steals Show from J-Lo, Tyler


Fox announced the new crop of judges for “American Idol” yesterday. As Lisa de Moraes of the Washington Post points out, the addition of J-Lo and Steven Tyler was a surprise to no one. But the show’s new in-house mentor, Interscope/A&M Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine, looks poised to shake things up a bit.

Iovine’s approach will be different, says the Post, focusing more on making Idol contestants into a “marketable, moneymaking commodity” and less on having them sing their way through several genres. Iovine is credited with developing rappers Dr. Dre and Tupak Shakur at Interscope. The label later had success with groups like No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.
