How Do You Interview Stephen Hawking?

Written by Pat's Papers | Tuesday, 10 May 2011 7:57 AM

The New York Times scores a super rare interview this morning, with Stephen Hawking, and it’s as interesting to read how the interview was conducted as it is to read what Hawkings has to say. To communicate, Hawkings looks at a screen built into his wheelchair on which commonly built words stream across. “With a cheek muscle,” he indicates which ones he needs and slowly begins to build sentences.

Because he has become increasingly frail after suffering an illness two years ago, Times reporter Claudia Dreifus says she emailed her questions to Hawking’s daughter a week before the interview so he could have more time to compose his answers—only the last exchange between the two is off the cuff.
