Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Spews Lava 72 Ft

There are some magnificent photos in the Hawaii papers this morning. The Puu Oo crater collapsed over the weekend, creating a new vent for the big island’s Kilauea Volcano. West Hawaii Today says within 45 minutes, the vent had grown to 545 meters long (about a third of a mile) and jets of lava were shooting about 22 meters (72 feet) up in the air. I was curious what the headline, “Madame Pele Presents…” was all about—so I looked it up. Turns out Madame Pele is the god of fire and volcanoes in traditional Hawaiian religion.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser says as by Sunday, the vent had grown to about 1.4 miles long. Scientists say the eruption is especially exciting because it is affecting a relatively untouched area, which means they get the chance to study a live volcano without worry about the impact it will have on people’s homes and lives.
