What’s in a Name?

Ever wonder how Mt. Rushmore got its name? According to the LA Times, anyone can suggest a name to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. From the proposed “stream of consciousness” for a stream in California to “the golden arches” for a McDonalds-inspired rock formation in Utah, hundreds of people have suggested names to the agency. The Board, usually shrouded in obscurity, has recently found itself in the middle of a heated public debate after a California man petitioned to change the name of the state’s Mt. Diablo to Mt. Reagan. He says he objects to the former because it means devil in Spanish.
