Frito Lay Goes All Natural

A Frito Lay executive recently read the label on the back of a chip bag and was aghast that he didn’t know what half the ingredients were. So he told the company’s food scientists to eliminate ingredients that don’t exist in a consumer’s cupboard says the Wall Street Journal. That means Sodium Diacetate is out, and real vinegar is in. But Frito Lay says its push for natural ingredients means that beet juice is now used in some of their products instead of FD&C Red 40.

No word on whether they’ve found a natural substitute to emulate the electric orange stain Cheetos leave behind. Actually, they haven’t—the company says it’s holding off on re-tooling the formulas for Cheetos and Doritos because they’re worried teens might be turned off by the “all-natural” description.
