“Hey You Guys, Wait Up!” Controversy at Tour de France

If you run out of gas in a NASCAR race they don’t wait up for you. But according to the New York Times, things are different in the world of cycling. I’ve never fully understood how the unwritten rules of cycling work, and this story has reinforced that. There’s a big etiquette controversy percolating at this year’s Tour de France because one guy didn’t wait up for the other when his chain broke yesterday. Alberto Contodor, who neglected to wait for Andy Schleck when his chain broke, took the yellow shirt after his unsportsmanlike behavior. Fans on the sideline immediately voiced their displeasure by booing him; Schleck released this ominous statement: “I can tell you, my stomach is full of anger and I want to take my revenge. I will take my revenge in the coming days.”

Contodor posted a video on YouTube explaining his decision after criticism reached a fever pitch:
