End of an Era: ABC Pulls Plug on Soaps

Written by Pat's Papers | Friday, 15 April 2011 6:56 AM

Daytime TV, as we’ve known it, is gone. Not only are Oprah and Regis both saying goodbye, ABC just announced its pulling the plug on two of its afternoon standbys, “One Life to Live” and “All My Children.” The LA Times says the decision is a financial one; both will be replaced with “lower-cost lifestyle shows.” The cancellations have also caused upheaval in the publishing world says the New York Post. The company behind Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly cut staff and turned over its operations to the company behind the National Enquirer. Only four soap operas remain on TV: NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,” CBS’s “Young & the Restless” and “The Bold & the Beautiful,” and ABC’s “General Hospital.”
