Domestic Medical Travel Picks Up

The question may soon be, are you here for business, pleasure or medical? USA Today says instead of traveling out of the country to save money on medical procedures, many employers are sending their sick employees to other states around the country. They claim they can save anywhere from 20 to 40 percent of their insurance costs by choosing a hospital in a state that offers lower prices. And that savings is usually more than enough to cover transportation expenses, unlike traveling overseas for medical procedures. Experts say if the practice catches on with some of the country’s biggest employers, it has the potential to lower prices and improve care across the board by creating “a truly national competition.” The problem remains motivating sick people to travel.
