Couple Says NY Times Misrepresented Them in Recession Story

A Florida couple says they are furious about being misrepresented in a recent New York Times article. The St. Petersburg Times says the article, which was about families whose houses were in foreclosure but were still living in them, rent-free, painted the couple as free-loaders and created quite a furor on the Internet. The couple says they’ve received thousands of angry letters after the Times article ran at the end of May. Most upsetting was the portrayal of them as deadbeats (“Foreclosure has allowed them to stabilize the family business. Go to Outback occasionally for a steak. Take their gas-guzzling airboat out for the weekend. Visit the Hard Rock Casino.”) The couple says the examples of their ongoing social life were given only after the Times’ reporter pressed them repeatedly for examples of what they do for entertainment.
