Cities Light Up Stop Signs in Age of Distraction

The Kansas City Star says “in our increasingly distracted and inattentive motoring lives” it takes more that just a plain red stop sign to grab our attention. That’s why more and more communities around the country are outfitting their traffic signs with LED lights. Experts say it’s not that people don’t know what a stop sign indicates—it’s one of the most iconic symbols in the world. Instead, they say as the number of distractions available to us increases their biggest challenge is to create signs of “increased conspicuity.”  Let’s just hope the towns that’ve adopted the new solar-powered sign don’t also decide to host a bull run.
