California Puts Pot Legalization on November Ballot

Come November, voters in California will vote on whether or not to legalize marijuana. Proponents of the measure turned in 694,248 signatures yesterday, far more than were necessary to get legalization on the ballot. The LA Times predicts the campaign will be watched closely around the country and will “once again put California on the forefront of the nation’s debate over whether to soften drug laws.” The initiative would make it legal for adults, 21 and over, to have an ounce of marijuana for personal use. An Oakland-based businessman is behind the latest effort to legalize pot - he’s pumped in $1.3 million of his own money in hopes that the measure will pass.
