California County Bans Happy Meals

Kids in one California county are a lot less happy today. That’s because Santa Clara County lawmakers just outlawed Happy Meals in a bid to make fast food less attractive to its youngest citizens. Only meals that meet certain nutritional requirements are allowed to be accompanied by a toy says the San Jose Mercury News.

Interestingly, yesterday was the day US Supreme Court decided to weigh in on whether a California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors is constitutional or not. A column in today’s San Jose Mercury News says it’s ironic that “on the same day the Supreme Court decides that kids have a First Amendment right to virtually hack off people’s limbs and blow up babies for fun, McDonald’s and Burger King may try to prove that kids also have the right to get free finger puppets with their cheeseburgers and fries.”
