Bin Laden Killed By US Forces in Pakistan

Osama bin Laden is dead. Killed by US forces in Pakistan, the most wanted man in the world was buried at sea yesterday reports the New York Times. Muslim tradition requires that a body be buried in 24 hours; by burying him at sea US troops were ostensibly trying to avoid creating a shrine. He was found in a compound just outside of Islamabad, near the military academy of the Pakistani Army. The Times says the compound where Bin Laden was being hid was conspicuously larger—eight times so—that the other houses in the neighborhood.

President Obama revealed the news in a late-night press conference last night, an announcement that set off an “extraordinary outpouring of emotion” all over the country. A news analysis in the Times does not mince words, calling the news “the biggest national security victory in a decade” and concluding that “the gravity of the moment was impossible to minimize.” The president, however, “gloat about his trophy,” using the moment instead to remember those who died on September 11.

The story was prominent front-page news in virtually every paper this morning—you’ve got to assume that those where it wasn’t went to press before the news broke. There seemed to be a handful of ways editors relayed the news: “Dead,” accompanied by a full-page photo was a popular choice, as were variations on the we-got-him theme. I was surprised to see two papers put the word ‘bastard’ in their headlines. Scroll down to check out some of the most interesting headlines we came across:
