Shovel vs. Salt?

We're expecting our first substantial snowfall of the season in New York. I just finished doing a live interview with NY1 reporter Vivian Lee, who's at a Home Depot store where people are stocking up on snow removal supplies.

Which brings me to a long-standing beef about a frequent snow removal practice here in New York: some people are addicted to salt.

When the snow starts to fall, they break out bag after bag of salt (or other de-icers) and just keep piling it on, trying to melt the snow faster than it falls. There have been many times when I've seen this happening and wondered why there's an aversion to the trusty snow shovel.

Sure, salt has a place in preventing an ice buildup on the sidewalk. But sometimes a little hard work with a shovel is the only answer to a big snowstorm.

Pat, are you updating while you are on air? That is awesome!

Pat, I'm with you: shoveling (not getting out the salt right away) is just good common sense. I grew up in New England, and the first thing we do is get out the shovel (or snow blower). Salt is not a bad idea if you want to prevent ice from forming, but first you have to do the basic hard work of clearing away the gunk.
Maybe this is our society, in miniature: we want the quick and easy fix, and we don't want to do the heavy lifting.

David -- maybe that's what irks me about it. As you say, it's like you're looking for the quick fix rather than trying for the real solution.

I think you could learn a lot by watching politicians clear their snow. Shovel? Salt?
