Missing Finger Found Inside Trout

“Let me guess, they found my fingers in a fish.” That was the first thing Haans Galassi said to police when the called him weeks after a wakeboard accident, which cost him several fingers. Galassi was right. The Spokane Spokesman-Review says a fisherman reported one of the missing digits after finding it inside a lake trout he caught. Police were able to get a fingerprint from the partially digested finger, and match the print to Galassi’s credit card number.

Move over dogs—mice may soon become man’s best friend. The New York Times describes an innovation in the world of medicine that could change the way treatments are prescribed. Called avatars or personalized animal models by some and “mini-mes” by others, the basic idea is to implant animals with the disease you suffer from so doctors can test various treatment options and find the best one.

Want a peek inside Einstein’s brain? Well now there’s an app for that. Researchers at the National Museum of Health and Medicine have just finished digitizing Einstein’s brain and are offering up their work through an iPad app, says the New York Daily News. The idea is that by allowing the public to access the images, someone will be able to pinpoint why Einstein was such a genius.

Cell Phones Eating Family Budget

The Wall Street Journal says cellphones are eating up the family budget. Since the iPhone debuted in 2007, people have spent consistently more on their cellphone plans, while dialing back spending on other luxuries like dining out or catching a movie. According to just-released government data, the amount people spend on their phone plans rose from $1,110 in 2007 to $1,226 in 2011.

Ref Fiasco Hurting NFL

This NFL replacement ref mess is really coming to a head. Yesterday the league issued a confusing statement about the botched call in Monday’s Seahawks-Packers game, calling it both an error and that the replacement ref was correct to award the Seahawks a touchdown. The Wall Street Journal’s summary of the whole debacle is really good, and points out the reality of the situation—namely that the $10 billion business is hurting itself over a $3 million dispute.

California Gives Driverless Cars Green Light

In the future there will be fewer drivers on California roads. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that yesterday the state became the third in the nation to allow driverless vehicles on the road. Said governor Jerry Brown as he signed the bill into law at Google’s headquarters: “Today, we’re looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow’s reality.”

The Case for Fresh Pasta

What took me so long to make fresh pasta? That’s the question writer and chef David Hagedorn asks himself in today’s Washington Post. And it’s a good one. Fresh pasta is relatively easy to make and is infinitely better than its dried counterparts. Hagedorn offers up some helpful tips along with his realization, like kneading the dough until it’s smooth and using your fingers to get rid of air pockets in stuffed pastas.
