This is a Stick-Up, By Smartphone
Robbing a bank? There’s an app for that. The Sun Sentinel says Florida police arrested a man who used his smartphone to type a “stick-up note.” The man is suspected of several other robberies, though he used an old-fashioned note for those. So why the new method? Opines the police chief: “Maybe there was an issue with his handwriting.”
UBS Whistleblower Gets $104 M Payout
There’s a very interesting story in this morning’s Wall Street Journal about the man who blew the whistle on UBS. Bradley Birkenfeld is behind bars but is being paid $104 million for cooperating with federal authorities, believed to be the largest individual whistleblower payout ever.
Mark Zuckerberg Addresses Facebook Woes
Mark Zuckerberg sat down to talk about Facebook’s woes in San Francisco yesterday, reports the Chronicle. It was his first public address since taking his company public earlier this year. Zuckerberg told the crowd that Facebook’s shoddy stock performance has “undermined staff morale” but that they are looking ahead and see a future in mobile. He blamed Facebook’s stumble on a dependence on HTML5 apps for mobile devices instead of writing code specifically for mobile operating systems.
Opinion: “Likability Trap”
Kathleen Parker writes a column in this morning’s Washington Post asking why we must “like” our potential presidents? Shouldn’t our main concern be their qualifications? She writes: “‘Like me, please’ has become the operative prerogative of campaigns, essentially forcing politicians to pander so that we can dislike them even more.”
Group of Lifeguards Fired for “Gangam Style” Spoof
A group of lifeguards is fighting to get their jobs back after being fired for making a video spoof of the YouTube sensation “Gangnam Style.” The song, by Korean pop star Psy, has been parodied by everyone from Britney Spears to the Oregon Ducks, but city officials were not amused, says the LA Times, claiming the group used “city resources without permission, namely their distinctive red swim trunks and the city pool.” SEE VIDEO
Bin Laden Book Bumps ‘50 Shades’ From No. 1 Spot
“No Easy Day,” the unauthorized story of Osama bin Laden’s death, has done the seemingly impossible: it has bumped “50 Shades of Gray” from the number one spot it’s held on USA Today’s bestseller list for 20 consecutive weeks. The book is co-written by a retired Navy SEAL who participated in the raid on bin Laden’s Pakistani compound last year.
Kicking the Soda Habit
Tomorrow is the day New York Mayor Bloomberg’s supersize-soda ban is expected to pass the Board of Health. In anticipation, the New York Post challenged seven readers to “kick the soda habit” and today, they print three pages of profiiles of people who lost significant weight just by curbing their soda drinking ways. Pretty impressive.
PHOTO: Teacher’s Strike Equals No School
Great photo on the front page of the Tribune this morning. It’s day three of the Chicago teacher’s strike—but not everyone is worried about a resolution. These kids seem to be enjoying their extended summer vacation with a day at the beach.
