The best headlines, the most interesting photography and conversation-starting articles from today’s newspapers.
Debate Moderating: Harder Than it Looks
Jim Lehrer is getting ready to “walk down a knife blade.” That’s how he’s described moderating a presidential debate, a job the Washington Post says is much harder than it looks. Not only do you have to ask the right questions with 60 million people watching, you must seem “unobtrusive, yet sharp and insistent…And the whole time, there’s a guy yelling in your earpiece to get to the next question.”
Freshman Talk Show Report Card
The New York Post grades this fall’s freshman talk show hosts in today’s paper. Ricki Lake and Jeff Probst didn’t fare so well, receiving Ds for their performances, which both drew in less than one million viewers. Katie Couric managed a B+ from the Post, and pulled in “a solid” 2.3 million viewers last week. But the best grade goes to comedian Steve Harvey, who receives an A; the Post says “his quick, confident success was something of a surprise.”
Adam Greenberg Back Up at Bat
Adam Greenberg, who’s probably most famously known as the guy who got hit by the first Major League pitch he ever faced, was back at the plate last night in Miami, says the Herald. He signed a one-day contract with the Marlins, after an online petition drive proposed the idea. Greenberg managed not to get hit in the head this time but was struck out on three pitches.
‘300-Pound Fashion Victims’
The Wall Street Journal has a funny article about the NFL’s “300-pound fashion victims” in today’s paper. Apparently, not everyone is a fan of the league’s new form-fitting Nike jerseys, which the Journal says look great on “Adonis-like players such Miami running back Reggie Bush, [but] is a bit less popular among those who are a bit more full-figured.” The response of defensive linemen has been, “does this jersey make me look fat?”
VIDEO: Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj Cat Fight
Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj make the front page of the New York Daily News this morning, under the headline, “Divas at War.” TMZ got a video clip of Minaj yelling at Carey during the “American Idol” auditions. At first I thought this chatter about a feud between the two new judges was just a PR stunt. But after seeing the VIDEO it seems pretty legit.
Nail Showdown: Gel vs. Traditional Polish
I’ve got to admit, these hands look identical to me. But apparently, there’s a big difference between a regular old manicure and these new gel-based ones. The Wall Street Journal says gel manicures cost twice as much as the traditional treatment and can last up to two weeks with no chips. The downside? A recent study found that the nails of women who applied gel polish for a year had “weakness, brittleness and thinning” though it’s unclear if that’s from chemicals in the polish or the arduous removal process.
San Francisco to Ban Public Nudity
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, last year’s “skid mark legislation” didn’t go far enough. That, if you don’t remember, was to ensure nudists placed a “barrier between a public seat and their bottoms.” This year, the same city supervisor has introduced legislation to ban nudity outright in “plazas, parklets, sidewalks, streets and public transit.”
Consider the Edamame
The minimalist is right. Mark Bittman is back in the New York Times dining section this morning with a recipe for edamame. I’ve read it a couple times, and I think I’ve got it down: “Boil, drain, salt, serve.” To be fair, Bittman also offers up some cool variations like toasting sesame seeds and sprinkling them on top.
