Title IX Olympics
USA Today calls it the “Title IX Olympics.” For the first time ever, Team USA will have more female athletes than males when the London Games kick off later this month, with 269 women and 261 men competing. Women’s boxing is making its debut this year, and the paper notes that the US mens soccer team failed to qualify this time around.
Internet Cat Film Festival
Mark your calendars, cinephiles. On August 30 the first ever Internet Cat Video Film Festival will take place at the Walker Museum of Art in Minneapolis. Organizer Katie Czarniecki told the LA Times even she’s not sure what to expect: “It will be interesting to see if people think it is silly, or great, or a waste of time. But I like the idea of everyone admitting they like cat videos.”
Rare Baseball Cards a Jackpot
The Toledo Blade says Karl Kissner was going through his grandfather’s attic this winter when he stumbled upon a box of old baseball cards. He recognized some of the names— Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Cy Young—so he contacted an auction house. Turns out the cards, which are in mint condition, “represent the greatest and rarest discovery in the sports card industry’s history.” They are expected to bring in close to $3 million at auction.
The Smell of Clean
Though not many people know what a glacier-carved waterfall actually smells like, it’s one of the best-selling scents Mr. Clean makes. The Wall Street Journal says in the race for customer loyalty, manufacturers are injecting exotic scents into ordinary household products. But not everything works. Cooked food smells, like baked apple or caramel, tend to fall flat because they compete with what’s actually being cooked. And anything with hints of banana must be labeled “tropical” to succeed.
Alaska Candidate Gets the Boot for Living in Truck
A republican candidate for the Alaska House of Representatives has been found ineligible to run, after it was confirmed she lives out of the back of her pick-up truck, reports the Anchorage Daily News. The woman, who says she owns a home in the district now was homeless earlier this year, which means she doesn’t meet the residency requirement to run for office.
Amputees Sue Universal Studios Hollywood
A group of amputees in suing Universal Studios Hollywood, claiming that the theme park violated the Americans with Disabilities Act when it refused to let the men ride an indoor roller coaster because they couldn’t properly grasp the safety bar. The LA Times says according to park policy, you must have one arm and one leg to ride.
LA County Takes Back Honorary Badges
The LA County Sheriff’s Office has admitted it was a bad idea to hand out official-looking badges to local politicians after this photo, of a woman in a nightclub, waving two handguns and wearing a badge, was released. The LA Times says the county will follow the lead of other municipalities and stop handing out honorary badges all together.
VIDEO: Racing Through San Francisco
You really couldn’t pick a better city to do this in. The San Francisco Chronicle has some great footage of a rally car driver racing over hills and and dodging trolleys in the city’s streets.
