Jil Sanders $290 Paper Bag
You now have the opportunity to spend $290 on a paper bag. Designer Jil Sander has created a $290 paper bag handbag. Made with treated brown paper and metal stitching, the New York Daily News says they are already sold out online and in stores.
Strict New Fuel-Economy Rules Announced
The federal government released new fuel-economy and carbon-emission standards yesterday, which are some of the strictest since emissions were first regulated in 1970 reports USA Today this morning. 54.5 miles per gallon is the standard automakers must hit by 2025. Currently, the standard is 29.7 mpg.
The Portland Loo: A Superior Public Toilet
Public restrooms have historically been places for “trash-can fires, furtive needle activity, commercial lovemaking, emergency baths, laundries for the homeless, and repositories of castoff diapers” says the LA Times. But not the Portland Loo. The solar-powered public toilet is graffiti-proof and almost impossible to destroy and now the Oregon officials are trying to sell their brand to other cities.
Manure Patrol at the State Fair
Who cleans up after all those animals at the State Fair? In Minnesota, it’s a company called “Doody Calls.” In all, animals (and apparently some humans) generated more than 3,000 tons of manure at last year’s fair. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says it’s a growing industry, full of pun-tastic company names: Dr. Poolittle, Turd Nerds, the Doo Crew, Pooparazzi, Treasure Hunters and Doo Process, to name a few.
Smoking (Meat) Inside
Live in a tiny apartment and dream of barbeque? Just in time for the Labor Day weekend, the New York Post tests out three different indoor meat-smoking methods: a stove-top smoker, a smoking bag, and a smoking gun (seriously). The stove-top variety got high marks for flavor, the bag for ease and the gun won the “impressing dinner guests” category.
SEAL Book: Osama bin Laden Dead Before Raid
The New York Daily News takes a look at a new book, which makes the claim that Osama bin Laden was actually dead before the Navy SEAL raid on his compound in Pakistan. Written under a pseudonym by a former SEAL, the book says when SEALs found bin Laden he was already dead, from a bullet wound to the head.
Expert Shaving Tips
According to the Wall Street Journal, Gillette watches 80 men shave every week at their research facility in England. And what have they learned from all these demos? That men, ultimately, just want a closer shave. Some tips to get you to the perfect shave, courtesy of the Gillette experts: Shave in the shower—or at least splash your face with hot water first, be sure to toss your blades every week, and always go with the grain.
