Man Wins Roach-Eating Contest, Then Dies (VIDEO)
A 32-year-old Florida man is dead, just moments after he won a local roach-eating contest, reports the Sun Sentinel this morning. VIDEO shows Edward Archbold shoving fistfuls of insects into his mouth before collapsing at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died. A reptile store organized the contest—the prize was a free python—and says all the bugs served were “bred in sterile conditions.”
Call For Pharmacy Controls After Outbreak
13,000 people have been exposed to fungal meningitis after they were given tainted spinal injections. The Wall Street Journal says “state regulators, federal agencies and the pharmacy industry” are all to blame for the outbreak, which was caused in part by shoddy oversight. Compounding pharmacies, where customized versions of medicine are formulated, operate in a “regulatory black hole,” says the Journal.
New Tooth Crown in 15 Minutes
Last time I broke a tooth the crown process dragged out over several weeks. No longer, says the New York Times this morning. There’s a new machine on the market that can make a crown for a tooth in 15 minutes. The computer program builds a ceramic crown that can be glued in place by using 3-D images a dentist takes while probing your mouth with a tiny camera. The whole process takes less than an hour.
Is Artificial Turf Bad for Kids?
Is artificial turf bad for kids? The jury’s still out says the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, but that hasn’t stopped some parents from pulling their kids off the field. The industry says they used to use lead-based paint to color the “grass” but the practice has been phased out. Now experts worry that kids are inadvertently ingesting little pieces of “dirt,” which are made from old tires.
Parents Sue Over Harvard Promises
How much would you pay for your kids to go to Harvard? The Boston Globe says a Hong Kong family is suing an “educational consultant” after he promised them both of their sons would be accepted to the Ivy League school. The parents says they spent $2.2 million following his instructions before deciding that they were being scammed.
‘Horseless Horse Show’
There’s a new fad in equestrian circles, says the Wall Street Journal this morning. “Horseless horse shows” revolve around riders facing a series of jumps…without their horses. Competitors are judged by the same criteria that they would be if they were on a horse—speed reigns supreme and penalties are given out for knocking down rails.
Shape Up for Slope Season
“Your ankles feel as though they’re caught between a Mack truck and a telephone pole…your quads start to shimmy like they’re shaking a can of paint. By the end of the morning, the question is, do you need new knees?” Ski season is just around the corner, and to get you ready the Denver Post has ask local instructors for some pre-season work outs. I’m going to do my squat jumps later today.
Rhea Perlman, Danny DeVito Split
The love story of Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito has been “cut short,” says the New York Post. The actors have decided to end their 41-year relationship—they’ve been married for 30 of those years. The Post says on their first date “DeVito showed Perlman a short film he had made documenting his ‘murder’ of a large cockroach he’d found crawling across his tiny apartment.”
