Ikea Scrubs Women Out of Saudi Arabian Catalogue
There’s something missing from an Ikea catalogue recently released in Saudi Arabia: women. The LA Times is among the papers picking up the photos that show a pajama-clad woman (see above) scrubbed out, leaving only a small boy in the ad. The company was contrite when a newspaper printed photos from the Swedish version and the sans women version side by side and pointed out that Ikea Saudi Arabia is run by an outside franchisee.
Phone Battery-Charging Purse
This makes me want to carry a purse. The New York Daily News interviews the inventor of the “Everpurse” in today’s paper. It’s a handbag that charges your phone when it’s stowed inside. The purse charges itself when placed on a wireless pad and holds two iPhone batteries of juice when fully charged. Entrepreneur Liz Ormesher Salcedo says she has plans to license the technology to other companies as well as creating a whole line of charging clothes.
VIDEO: Discovery Show Crashes a Plane
Scientists will soon have a better idea of what happens when a plane crashes. A group of experts recently collaborated with a new Discovery show called Curiousity (episode airs this Sunday) to crash a jet in the Mexican desert. Aboard were several crash test dummies outfitted with sensors and cameras. The goal is to see where you have the best chance of surviving.
Nissan Revives Datsun Brand
After a 30-year hiatus, Nissan is bringing back the Datsun. The plan is to sell a “bare bones” version of the brand in developing countries for $3000. The Wall Street Journal has a great interactive graphic explaining exactly what $3000 buys. No automatic windows, for one. Or any airbags. And the engine used in the new stripped down models will be a two-cylinder, like the ones used in motorcycles.
Arnold’s Memoir: Sincere or ‘Self-Absorption on Steroids’
Is it interesting? Or TMI? The San Jose Mercury News reviews Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new memoir this morning but can’t figure out whether the book is sincere or “self-absorption on steroids.” In addition to several affairs he conducted over his 25-year marriage to Maria Shriver, the former Governator admits he kept other secrets from his wife—like his decision to run for governor, which he disclosed just four days before his public announcement.
Netflix for the Big Screen
Think of it as Netflix for the big screen, says the New York Daily News. For a $30 monthly fee, a new company called Movie Pass will let you see all the (2-D) movies you want. Customers get a Movie Pass Discover card to buy their tickets, which they can use at any theater that accepts Discover. The company then pays the theater full price for your admission. Right now, access is by invitation-only and 75,000 people are already on the waiting list.
Opinion: Romney’s ‘Astonishingly Low” Tax Rate
The New York Times is hitting Mitt Romney with a direct attack on the way he’s avoided taxes over the years. The front-page story says the Times reviewed “thousands of pages of financial documents” to learn more about how Romney was either able to avoid or reduce his taxes before broadening to ask how Bain Capital’s tax structure may have benefitted the company and in turn put more money in Romney’s pockets. Inside, an editorial calls Romney’s tax rate “astonishingly low.”
PHOTO: Harvest Moon
Beautiful photo on the front page of the Chicago Tribune this morning. That’s a harvest moon—a full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox—beaming behind a statue atop the old Montgomery Ward building. Tribune photographer Chris Walker details how he got the amazing shot on the paper’s blog.
