How Your Body Acclimatizes to Heat

How Your Body Acclimatizes to Heat

Bookmark this Washington Post story for the next time you’re sitting on the couch, panting in front of the fan and wondering if you’ll make it until fall. The paper has a great explanation—along with great graphics—about how your body acclimatizes to heat. The first days of summer feel so hot because it’s been three seasons since the last time we had to cool ourselves down efficiently.

Europe Not Quite a Bargain For US Travelers

Europe Not Quite a Bargain For US Travelers

If Europe is on your vacation radar this summer, USA Today has some good news…and some not-so-good news. Europe is more affordable than ever for US travelers right now because of a drop in the Euro’s value. Unfortunately, prices are so high in the summer anyways that any savings are immediately offset.

School Swimsuits Lack Modesty

School Swimsuits Lack Modesty

Some things, it turns out, don’t get better with age. The Chicago Tribune says a group of freshman are protesting their school-issued swimsuits…but not because they cover too much up. They say the suits are so old and worn out that they “leave little room for modesty.”

World Buzzing About Young Spelling Bee Contestant

World Buzzing About Young Spelling Bee Contestant

There’s a pretty impressive profile of Lori Anne Madison in today’s Daily Mail. The six-year-old girl is the youngest person ever to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Her parents say she started reading on her own before the age of two and secured her spot in the competition by correctly spelling vaquero. Her all-time favorite word? Sprachgefuhl.

Do Headphones Help You Work?

Do Headphones Help You Work?

The Wall Street Journal says ear buds and noise-canceling headphones have become “de rigueur ear-wear in offices throughout the country.” But do they work? Although people respond differently to music, research has shown that music—especially with lyrics—can actually make it harder to concentrate.

What does one of the richest men in the world do on his honeymoon? Eat at McDonalds. The New York Post has a photo of Mark Zuckerberg and his new bride Priscilla Chan enjoying some burgers on the Mignanelli Steps in Rome.

Police ID Flesh-Eating Man

Police ID Flesh-Eating Man

An almost unbelievable story in the Miami Herald this morning. Surveillance cameras outside the newspaper’s building caught a gruesome crime over the weekend. Apparently, one naked man was seen gnawing the face off another naked man, who is in critical condition. Police have identified the flesh-eating attacker, who was shot dead by officers at the scene, as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene.

Don’t Snap Photos of Road Scofflaws

Don’t Snap Photos of Road Scofflaws

You see someone speeding, or throwing their trash out the car window—what do you do? It’s becoming an increasingly common practice for drivers to record other drivers breaking the law with their cellphone cameras, says the San Jose Mercury News. But there’s a Catch-22 to consider: it’s illegal to snap photos while behind the wheel.

The LeMons Car Racing Circuit

The LeMons Car Racing Circuit

What do you do when life hands you lemons? Race them, says the San Francisco Chronicle, in a cool profile about an under-the-radar sporting event: the LeMons Racing Circuit. To qualify, racers must convince a panel of judges that they didn’t pay more than $500 for their cars. To win, a car must make a certain number of laps in the allotted time, which can range from “14 hours to 24.” VIDEO
