(VIDEO) New Rochelle’s Miracle Shot
It’s the shot heard ‘round the Internet. The Westchester Journal News has front page coverage of New Rochelle’s miracle shot in today’s paper. Khalil Edney has become an overnight celebrity—he’s gone from 462 Twitter followers to well over 2000 in a day—after making a 60-foot shot in the closing seconds of a basketball game against rival high school Mount Vernon. Described by ESPN as the “craziest ending to a basketball game ever,” the amazing VIDEO is a must-see.
Harder to Book Frequent Flyer Tickets on Delta
Many travelers say it’s tougher to book a frequent flyer seat on Delta than on other airlines and so USA Today undertook some investigating. The paper took 50 routes at random and tried to get a free seat at the base level. Out of the 50, 42 routes had no seat available. Delta wouldn’t give a straight answer when asked if every flight has at least one free seat available.
Study: Lack of Sleep Bad for Genes
Bad news for those of us who wake up before the sun rises. A new study, reported in today’s Washington Post, has found that a lack of sleep is bad for your genes. Chronic sleep deprivation, which is defined as getting less than six hours of sleep a night for a week, changes the activity of about 3 percent of our genes. Among the genes disturbed by sleepless nights are ones that control “metabolism, immunity, inflammation, and hormone response.”
MIT’s Charm School
There’s one subject that MIT students struggle with, says the LA Times: etiquette. So the university has come up with a solution. Now in its 20th year, MIT’s Charm School is offered to students who, though their “SAT scores dwarf the average mortgage payment” need a little help with the social side of life. Instruction includes answering tough questions like: what is okay to dunk (only biscotti, never donuts); should a man hold the door for his female boss (if you get there first hold it for everyone); and when is it okay to wear open-toed shoes to an interview (never).
Obama Comes Out in Favor of Unlocking Phones
The Washington Post says the Obama Administration gave clear direction yesterday on a nagging issue for cell phone users, saying that your phone company should NOT have the right to lock your phone to one mobile network forever. The White House came out in favor of unlocking phones after your initial contract runs up.
In Pursuit of the the Higgs Boson
If you’re interested in the Higgs Boson—or want to write a book on it—pick up a copy of the New York Times today, which devotes its entire science section to the so-called “God Particle.” The main article is about the two groups of 3,000 scientists at the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva that are locked in a “friendly but deadly serious competition” to find the particle.
Hess Toy Trucks in Limbo
March seems a bit early to start thinking about Christmas stockings, but the New York Post says a decision by Hess Corp. may change your gift buying strategy this year. The company said yesterday that it will try to sell its retail gas business, which leaves the fate of its popular toy truck in peril too. (The truck seems safe through 2013, but then all bets are off.) Collectors of the Hess truck are hoping someone buys the stations and keeps the Hess brand, making it more likely that the toy tradition will continue.
Private Booze Cruise Busted
It was their own private booze cruise. Three people were arrested for stealing a luxury yacht, reports the San Francisco Chronicle, when their getaway vehicle ran ashore just hours after the heist. Police say the two women and one man in custody had packed the boat with “pizza and beer” and taken off in the middle of the night. The trio spend several hours tossing in the waves before the owner recognized his boat on the local news and alerted authorities.
