LA Kings Take Stanley Cup

With its palm trees and sunny beaches, Los Angeles doesn’t seem like a typical hockey town. But last night the Kings proved that’s exactly what it is by winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup ever. Or as LA Times writer Bill Plaschke puts it: “A group of bearded beach bums has just stolen sports’ most chilling trophy and stuck it where the sun shines.”

Review: New Beach Boys Album Stands Test of Time

The New York Daily News’s Jim Farber gives a rave review for the new Beach Boys album. Farber says even though the band’s material hasn’t changed—all the songs on “That’s Why God Made The Radio”  mention “sun, sand and sea”—the band’s attitude has. Released in time for the Beach Boys 50th anniversary, the album is dives into the “tidal pull of age and time.”

Chavez to Run for Reelection

Hugo Chavez is running for reelection, a move that could keep him in power for another six years, says the Miami Herald. It was unclear whether Venezuelan president would seek another term after battling cancer for more than a year. But Chavez came out in full force, performing an impromptu song and dance number for the crowd before giving an “hours-long speech.”

Robin Roberts Faces New Health Scare

The New York Daily News has an update on “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts’s recent health scare. Apparently, the treatment Roberts received while battling breast cancer has caused a new disease, MDS. The rare condition can cause leukemia if left untreated. Roberts will undergo a bone marrow transplant, from tissue donated by her sister.

Football Artist Wins Copyright Lawsuit

An artist has come out victorious in a seven-year legal battle with the University of Alabama, reports the Birmingham News this morning. Daniel Moore was sued by the school because of his paintings, which depict Alabama football players in uniform. The U of A claimed Moore’s images constitute copyright infringement, but a judge decided yesterday that they are protected under the First Amendment.

Impostor Crashes Braves Reunion

Who’s on first? At a recent Braves reunion, it was a question even Abbott and Costello couldn’t answer, says the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Witnesses say a middle-aged man showed up at the get-together, claiming to be former player John Sullivan. Problem is Sullivan never played for the Braves. And the man claiming to be him was overweight, out of shape and could barely hit a baseball. When someone finally got up the nerve to ask the mysterious player what years he played he responded, “1986 or 1987, I’m not sure.”

The next time someone leaves an unwanted present in front of your house, there are tools at your disposal. USA Today says DNA tests are now available to determine whose dog is pooping on your lawn. A company called PooPrints is the industry leader, with clients in 28 US states.

Lunar Greenhouse Hits the Road

You’ve got to eat your veggies—even in space. Scientists are putting the finishing touches on the University of Arizona’s Lunar Greenhouse, a structure built as a “life-support system for astronauts.” But before it makes its way to space, it will hit the road. The Arizona Daily Star says you can check out the project this summer at the San Diego County Fair and later at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
