Gun Sales Spike in Colorado as Accused Killer Goes to Court
James Eagan Holmes, the man accused of killing a dozen people in a Colorado movie theater, made his first court appearance yesterday. Sporting a crazy mop of bright orange hair, the Denver Post says he didn’t speak a word. The Post notes that gun sales have risen 41 percent in Colorado since last week’s shooting and that instructors are reporting an increase in people training to qualify for a concealed-carry permit.
Opinion: Simplify Code Before Taxing Internet Retailers
The CEO of Overstock.com explains to the Wall Street Journal why taxing online purchases isn’t as simple for Internet retailers as the taxes collected by brick-and-mortar stores. First of all, there are 9,600 taxing jurisdictions in the country, and they are often overlapping—the Dallas-Fort Worth airport sits in six separate ones. So a Snickers bar could be taxable in one city and not in the next. How does an Internet shop keep track of that?
Opinion: To Breast Feed or Not is the Loaded Question
i’m not going to try to summarize Jane Brody’s column because there are such polarized views on this topic. But if you’re into the to-breast-feed-or-not debate you should check out the New York Times this morning. Brody looks at both sides and comes down somewhere in the middle.
Sally Ride, First US Woman in Space, Dies at 61
Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died yesterday at the age of 61 after losing her battle with pancreatic cancer. Ride was not only the first American woman to reach space, she was also the youngest American, completed her first shuttle ride at 32 years and 23 days old. Another interesting note: Ride came out in her obituary, says the Houston Chronicle—she is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy.
Olympic Requirement: Get a Tattoo
The New York Times says after you qualify for the US Olympic Swim team, there’s just one more thing you have to do: get a tattoo. Apparently, a tattoo of the Olympic logo has become near mandatory. Because only two Americans qualify for most of the swimming events the tattoo of the Olympic rings is seen as quite a badge of honor.
Mariah Carey New ‘Idol’ Judge
You lose one pop diva in her early 40s—what must you do? Find another. Mariah Carey has signed on to be an “American Idol” judge. New York Daily News columnist David Hinckley says Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly also hinted at her salary while sharing the news with TV reporters—a cool $12 million.
World’s Most Successful Sketch Artist
Lois Gibson is good at her job—really good. In fact, she is the world’s most successful sketch artist, having entered the Guinness Book of World Records for her help in solving more than 1,000 crimes. The Daily Mail prints a handful of her masterpieces this morning, which are stunningly accurate.
See a Pig? Call the Swine Line
If you see a feral pig, say something. The Idaho Statesman says its state has joined with Oregon and Washington to create a “swine line,” a number residents can call to “squeal on pigs.” Authorities are trying to gauge the feral pig population in the Northwest. Wild pigs aren’t native to the US and are considered a pest, albeit a productive one—they start breeding at 6 months old and can have multiple litters a year.
