Gun Sales Spike in Colorado as Accused Killer Goes to Court

Gun Sales Spike in Colorado as Accused Killer Goes to Court

James Eagan Holmes, the man accused of killing a dozen people in a Colorado movie theater, made his first court appearance yesterday. Sporting a crazy mop of bright orange hair, the Denver Post says he didn’t speak a word. The Post notes that gun sales have risen 41 percent in Colorado since last week’s shooting and that instructors are reporting an increase in people training to qualify for a concealed-carry permit.

Opinion: Simplify Code Before Taxing Internet Retailers

Opinion: Simplify Code Before Taxing Internet Retailers

The CEO of Overstock.com explains to the Wall Street Journal why taxing online purchases isn’t as simple for Internet retailers as the taxes collected by brick-and-mortar stores. First of all, there are 9,600 taxing jurisdictions in the country, and they are often overlapping—the Dallas-Fort Worth airport sits in six separate ones. Because only two Americans qualify for most of the swimming events the tattoo of the Olympic rings is seen as quite a badge of honor.

See a Pig? Call the Swine Line

See a Pig? Call the Swine Line

If you see a feral pig, say something. The Idaho Statesman says its state has joined with Oregon and Washington to create a “swine line,” a number residents can call to “squeal on pigs.” Authorities are trying to gauge the feral pig population in the Northwest. Wild pigs aren’t native to the US and are considered a pest, albeit a productive one—they start breeding at 6 months old and can have multiple litters a year.
