The best headlines, the most interesting photography and conversation-starting articles from today’s newspapers.
Happy Birthday, Air Conditioning!
We should all say thanks to Willis Carrier today. In 1902 he stamped this date (July 17) on the blueprints for a system that cooled the air by removing humidity. The New York Times looks back at the history of the air conditioner and how Mr. Carrier changed our lives with his innovation.
Sad Day for Publishing World
Two very familiar authors passed away earlier this week. The Salt Lake Tribune has an obituary for Stephen Covey, the Mormon author who combined self help and business into the best-selling “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” And in the New York Times, Idaville will never be the same. Encyclopedia Brown author Donald Sobol has died at the age of 87.
Google Exec Marissa Mayer Becomes Yahoo Latest CEO
Google executive Marissa Mayer is rolling the dice. She’s just accepted an offer to become the CEO of Yahoo, the seventh chief the company’s had in the last five years. The San Francisco Chronicle says if “she can successfully reinvigorate Yahoo, a task that many short-lived CEOs have failed spectacularly at completing, it would cement her spot among the pantheon of celebrated technology leaders.”
Romney Impersonator Ready for Race
Mike Cote has “Mitt his match” says the LA Times. The 56-year-old drywall finisher is a spitting image of Mitt Romney, albeit with a little dye in his eyebrows. Cote is hoping as the presidential campaign heats up, so will his impersonation career. Cote’s already had some practice on a yet-to-be-aired “Real World”-type show, where a group of presidential impersonators live together.
Splitting Seconds at the Olympics
The Washington Post has a great graphic in this morning’s paper, explaining how exactly officials implement fraction-of-a-second timing during the Olympics. Track and swimming events have the most elaborate timing set-ups. It all starts once an athlete’s feet touch the starting blocks, which are designed to tell if they push off even a tenth of a second too early.
Chicagoans Ask Dude Where’s My Car?
Chicago residents have a simple question: dude, where’s my car? The city apparently has a policy of towing cars willy-nilly—17,000 last year—when they need to do construction on the street. Owners are supposed to call 311 if they wake up and find their car missing. But according to the Tribune, a back log has built up, meaning that even when people do call, it can take a week or longer to locate their vehicles.
Big Names on the Small Screen
Forget the big screen, or even the TV screen—your computer screen is the place to catch a handful of interesting new projects says USA Today. Tom Hanks is the creator and voice behind “Electric City,” an animated sci-fi video series, which debuts this Thursday. And later this month Jerry Seinfeld launches his own direct-to-online production, called “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Take a wild stab at what that one’s about.
Photo of the Day: Antler Envy
It’s a case of “antler envy” on the front page of the Anchorage Daily News this morning. An Alaskan family decided to display a 30-year-old pair of antlers in their front lawn, says the caption to the awesome photo. They looked on as a young moose (sans antlers) moseyed over to check them out.
