It’s Official: Brooklyn Cooler Than Manhattan
In case me moving to Brooklyn wasn’t your first cue that the trend has gone past the cutting edge, USA Today has a front page story about how Brooklyn has become cooler than Manhattan, calling it “a land of rooftop farms and pop-up art galleries, of haircuts, eyeglasses, hats and body piercings so chic that even Parisians utter, ‘Très Brooklyn!’”
Taylor Swift Buys $5 Million Next to Kennedys
Taylor Swift is dating Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s son Conor. And according to the New York Daily News, she just dropped $4.9 million to buy a house near the Kennedy compound on Cape Cod—one in “spitting distance from the summer home of Conor’s grandmother Ethel Kennedy.”
Longtime Cosmo Editor Helen Gurley Brown Dies
Helen Gurley Brown, the iconic editor who gave Cosmopolitan “its purr,” has died. She was 90. An obituary in the New York Times credits Ms. Brown with being the first person to “introduce frank discussions of sex” into women’s magazines. She also authored the seminal “Sex and the Single Girl” in 1964, which not only told unmarried women to have sex, but that they should enjoy it.
Google Buys Frommer’s Travel Guides
Google, I have a plea: Please don’t ruin my favorite series of travel books. The search giant announced yesterday that it is buying Frommer’s travel-guide business. The price was undisclosed but the Wall Street Journal says the deal cost Google about $25 million.
Record-breaking Python Found in Florida
Planning a trip to the Everglades? Be sure to watch where you step. The Sun Sentinel says a record-breaking Burmese python was just discovered in the park, measuring 17 feet, 7 inches. And in its belly, 87 eggs—another state record. Scientists say the snake’s length is an indication that pythons have few to no predators, and are able to stay alive for a long, long time in the wild.
Facebook Status: License to Brag
Really tired today after a fun-filled vacation in the Alberta and British Columbia. If I had enough energy to update my Facebook status, that’s what it would read. Which would make me a braggart, says the Wall Street Journal, just like everyone else who updates their status. As writer Elizabeth Bernstein puts it: “the Internet has given us a global audience for our bombast, and social media sites encourage it.”
Heavy Sweaters Can Zap Problem with Microwave
According to the Wall Street Journal, heavy sweaters can have the problem reduced by having their sweat glands zapped with microwaves. Yes, that’s right. The procedure, which received FDA approval last year, uses microwaves to destroy most of the 30,000 sweat glands in the armpit. On average, the volume of sweat is reduced by about 82 percent.
