Man in the News: Barack Obama

An embrace between Bill Clinton and President Obama dominates the front page of the New York Times this morning but a “Man in the News” profile is all about the president. On the eve of his appearance at the DNC, the Times writes: “If Denver was all about promise, Charlotte is all about patience. Whether Americans grant the 44th president a four-year extension will depend in part on his ability to reconcile the heady aspirations of 2008 with the messy results of the four years that followed.”

Andy Roddick’s loss to Argentine Juan Martin del Potro at the US Open yesterday was a big one for the world of tennis. Roddick had said prior to the tourney that this would be his last. The New York Post says his last match before retirement was fitting—he went out as the last American standing.

USA Today has a great round up of fall books to check out. Picks include J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults and a new book from 81-year-old Tom Wolfe, which is set in Miami. There’s a behind-the-scenes look at President Obama by Bob Woodward, the first in a four-book series by Lemony Snicket and new novels by Junot Diaz, Michael Chabon and Zadie Smith round out the list. She’s a bargain Boo Boo, says the New York Post. The star of TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” draws roughly three million viewers a week. Her weekly paycheck? Only about $4,000. The Post says “one of the greatest bargains since the Dutch bought Manhattan for $24.”

David Pogue reviews a new crop of walkie-talkie apps for smartphones in the New York Times this morning.  He says before you dismiss the walkie-talkie apps as gimmicks, consider when they could be helpful: If you’re driving, they’re way more safe than texting and in general talking is more accurate and expressive than typing.

Eva Longoria Opens Steakhouse for Women

Men like their steak. But so do women, which is what prompted actress Eva Longoria into her latest business venture: a steakhouse for women. Called SHe, the LA Times says Las Vegas restaurant will feature small plates and a catwalk for runway shows. Longoria says it’s in response to the crop of male-centric restaurants that have hit the scene, featuring scantily clad waitresses.

Court Mulls Whether Lap Dancing is Art

New York’s Court of Appeals is considering a weighty topic right now, says the New York Times: is lap dancing an art form? The case involves a strip club that wants the same sort of tax exempt status given to arts groups. The argument: that lap dancing is indeed art.
