New Cloud Type Named

New Cloud Type Named

Cumulus, Nimbus—meet your cousin Undulatus Asperatus. Cloud experts are about to approve the first new type of cloud since 1951, reports USA Today this morning. The new classification means “agitated waves” in Latin and “looks like a surreal undulating blanket that covers part or all of the sky.” Undulatus Asperatus had its first brush with fame back in 2006, when a cloudspotter from Iowa spotted one and snapped a photo, which subsequently went viral.

‘Rahm Emanuel Likes Nickelback’

‘Rahm Emanuel Likes Nickelback’

Now that the teacher’s strike is over, the Chicago Tribune hunts down Mike Konkoleski, whose picket signs were by far the best of the eight-day strike. Every day Konkoleski carried a new sign that decreed “Rahm Emanuel Likes (fill in the embarrassing musician.)” First day it was Nickelback, second day was Creed. The first-year math teach says he planned to do ABBA, but some of his colleagues were fans. If the strike had lasted any longer he had a “Rahm Emanuel Likes 98 Degrees” sign ready to go.

Knotts Berry Farm Ride Strands Riders

Knotts Berry Farm Ride Strands Riders

How much does this suck? The Orange County Register prints video stills of the unfortunate people who got stuck on top of the Windseeker, a ride at Knott’s Berry Farm in California. They spend three and a half hours dangling 300 feet above ground…seeking the wind. It’s the second time the ride has malfunctioned this month.

Study: More People Commuting in Groups

Study: More People Commuting in Groups

Some good news about the sluggish economy this morning. It has done what environmental lobbying has failed to do—get them to stop commuting solo. According to USA Today, 2011 saw another dip in the amount of solo commuters, while the number of workers who relied on public transport or car pooling—and van pooling—rose again.

Meet the New Boss: Data

Meet the New Boss: Data

The boss is no longer the boss, says the Wall Street Journal. These days, data reigns supreme. Companies are using computer algorithms to make more big decisions. Like how much you’re paid. The computer models indicate that giving you a raise may not make you more likely to stay in your job or motivate you to work harder. So maybe they just won’t give you a raise.

Voila, Your Couch is a Bunk Bed

Voila, Your Couch is a Bunk Bed

How cool is this photo in the New York Times this morning. It’s a sofa that converts into a bunk bed. Made by an Italian designer, it’s easy to unfold, says the Times—all you need to do is pull down on the ladder and the upper berth locks into place.

Where’s Waldo? This Year He’s Everywhere

Where’s Waldo? This Year He’s Everywhere

Where’s Waldo? The LA Times says he’s about to be everywhere. The children’s book icon is celebrating his 25th anniversary this year. Interestingly, it seems to be the fashion industry that’s the most enthusiastic about the milestone.  Several designers are releasing Waldo-inspired products—from a Comme de Garcons scarf printed with his face to a pair of his signature black glasses—and the man himself was spotted, wearing red and white stripes, at the front row during New York Fashion Week.
